Others asked this question of Jesus during his ministry in Galilee, and of Peter on the Day of Pentecost. After two thousand years, even many confirmed Christians remain confused. May a Christian work on the Sabbath? Is the Sabbath Saturday or Sunday? Must we eat Kosher? Paul said that Christ fulfilled the Law, so what are the rules for today? Must Christians still follow the Ten Commandments, or have all the commandments been abolished in favor of ""love""? If there is no Law, is anything still a sin? What are we required to do, or forbidden to do, and how much can we get away with, and still be saved? The New Testament, especially in the practical teachings of the Apostle Paul, contains adequate answers to many of these questions and provides principles for making Godly decisions even on debatable matters never dreamt of two thousand years ago.. An objective review of Church history demonstrates that Christian theology soon went astray from that laid out in the New Testament, as the Fathers of the Church lost their understanding of sound interpretive principles. Theology began to be supplemented, then co-opted and corrupted, by Greek philosophy: namely, Middle Platonism, then Neoplatonism, and later Theurgy. The external, heterodox doctrines derived from Pagan philosophy were embraced by the Eastern Church, carried into the Western Church, repeatedly revived in the Medieval Church in the form of Scholasticism, Mysticism, and Catholic Church dogma, and re-popularized by modern theologians to the present day. The negative influence of these heterodoxies is manifest in modern elements of Mysticism, Contemplative Prayer, Sacramentalism, Sacerdotalism, the so-called New Theology, and emphasis on Universalism, Liberation, Unity, Mystical Union, apotheosis, divinization, and "spiritual formation.". "Divine parodies" present Christian truths in an artful and entertaining form. A parody is a humorous or satirical imitation of something else. Christian parody is a time-honored tradition. The acme of Christian parody was achieved by Erasmus in "The Praise of Folly" 500 years ago. "Holy histories" are illustrations of Gospel truth drawn from historical persons and events. They should not be confused with hagiography, which in modern times is used pejoratively of histories and biographies not considered sufficiently critical or cynical. There is much to be learned from the past, and many persons worthy of emulation. Also included is a selection of original poetry, which likewise is meant to convey Gospel principles.. Jesus told his disciples that He would send them "another Comforter" like himself, to remain with them forever and teach them all things. But before the Comforter could come, Jesus had to go away. Why? Because it was God's plan to make Christ the Giver of the Holy Spirit in order to indwell and empower His Church throughout the Church Age. The author draws from Scripture, personal experience, and insights from psychology and medical science to construct a cogent theory of how Spirit Baptism works, where the indwelling Spirit resides in the believer, and what the believer can expect, along with practical advice on how to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and to manifest Gifts of the Spirit.. With a clear head and winsome sense of humor, Stephen Westerholm compares the traditional understanding of Paul to more recent readings, drawing on the writings of key figures in the debate both past and present. Westerholm first offers a detailed portrait of the "Lutheran" Paul, including the way such theologians as Augustine, Luther, Calvin, and Wesley have traditionally interpreted "justification by faith" to mean that God declares sinners "righteous" by his grace apart from "works." Westerholm then explores how Paul has fared in the twentieth century, in which "New Perspective" readings of Paul see him teaching that Gentiles need not become Jews or observe Jewish law to be God's people. The final section of the book looks anew at disputed areas of Paul's theological language and offers compelling discussion on the place of both justification by faith and Mosaic law in divine redemption.. As the title of this study indicates, the content of Paul's letter to the Galatians "changes everything" in the sense that following Christ is a radical departure from living without Him. However, since human nature seems to insist that one's salvation is brought about by personal deeds that obligate God to save them, the doctrine and theology found in these pages is exceptionally important. Thus, the urgent need for Paul's testimony of justification by faith in Christ to the Galatians.. This Changes Everything Paul S Letter To The Galatians PDF Download or read online.

"Westerholm is admirably concerned to focus our attention on Paul's theology, specifically on the theological issues that arose for the Apostle in his valiant attempt to assess the role of the law after the advent of Christ. Beginning with an unusually mature account of the debate that is currently raging over Paul's understanding of the law, Westerholm has provided an analysis of his own that will certainly claim the attention of all student's of Paul the theologian." - J. Louis Martyn "This is the most clearly written and understandable treatment of the debate over the law in Pauline thought that I have seen." - Robert Jewett "Westerholm has produced an illuminating, engaging, and refreshing book. He sets forth the views of major interpreters of Paul with clarity and candor, engages them, and then makes proposals of his own, which are both well considered and instructive. The book is both interesting and informative, a reader's delight." - Arland J. Hultgren. Israel S Law And The Church S Faith PDF Download or read online.

This book brings international Christian scholars together to celebrate Robert Jewettbs lifelong interest in Romans by reviewing -- and significantly advancing -- five fruitful approaches to Paulbs most influential work. James D. G. Dunn, Jeffrey B. Gibson, and Graydon F. Snyder show where the bnew approachb to Pauline theology elucidates and corrects earlier theological appropriations of the letter to the Romans. William S. Campbell, James D. Hester, and Wilhelm Wuellner illustrate different models of rhetorical criticism. Peter Lampe and Carolyn Osiek show what can be gained by a social-historical approach to Romans. Sheila E. McGinn, Elsa Tamez, and Pamela Thimmes demonstrate how a feminist hermeneutic clarifies key texts from Romans and challenges the interpretive tradition. Keith Augustus Burton, Lareta Halteman Finger, and L. D. Hurst create a conversation between Paulbs letter and contemporary culture. An introduction provides context for these chapters by offering a helpful overview of recent trends in New Testament scholarship that are pertinent to Pauline studies, particularly the study of Romans. The authors, all established teachers in academic and church settings, recognize the need for analyses of the Bible that are substantial and scholarly but also intelligible to nonspecialists. The essays in "Celebrating Romans" will challenge the thinking of students and scholars alike, illuminating diverse methods of biblical analysis and fostering a deeper appreciation for and engagement with this crowning literary achievement of the apostle to the Gentiles. Paul told the Romans “the Law is holy and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” Yet four times in three epistles he wrote, “We are not under law but under grace.” Christians read these seemingly conflicting statements and are easily confused. They wonder if anyone can understand how the law and the Old Testament relates to their faith. Some take the easy way out and all but ignore the Old Testament calling it legalism. They prefer to concentrate on and enjoy the magnificent grace of God that comes with salvation. This limits their understanding of the Scriptures and indeed, restricts spiritual growth. Confusion further abounds because just about every denomination has a different interpretation of the law and the relationship between the testaments. Lester Stephenson proposes a different approach rooted in Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:17-18, “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” Those two verses call for Christians to look anew at the law and the rest of the Old Testament. Not one part of the law or what the prophets wrote will pass away until Jesus has completely fulfilled it. Stephenson stresses that Christians must recognize the importance of the Bible that Jesus and the apostles used. Each time Jesus and the apostles used the phrase, “it is written” they were using an Old Testament passage to illustrate a New Testament principle. In A Biblicist View of Law and Gospel, Stephenson advocates a biblicist view based on careful Bible study to explain how Christians are to view the law and the way the testaments fit together as an inspired whole..
